BONNERS FERRY — Thursday, Oct. 19, the Badgers boys soccer team participated in the 3A State Soccer Tournament. Their first match was closely-contested contest against Weiser High School.

Bonners Ferry scored first and proceeded to take the game into overtime when the teams were tied 3-3 at the end of regulation. In overtime, the teams sought a “Golden Goal,” where the first team to score wins. The Weiser team utilized their first corner kick in overtime to score a well-placed header into the Badgers goal, which bumped BFHS into the consolation bracket of the tournament.

On Friday, the Badgers faced Teton High School.

“This was a loser out game which brought a lot of emotion and energy,” said coach Wayne Wilkerson.

Bonners Ferry pulled through and won the game 2-1, which put the Badgers boys into the consolation final.

With good competition from Sugar Salem High School, the boys faced a team that plays similarly with their physical game. Subsequently, the game went into overtime. After two sets of 10 minutes of overtime play, the score remained tied 1-1, which brought the teams to a ‘shootout.’ A shootout is where each team takes five penalty kicks against the opponent’s goalkeeper, and the team with the most goals out of the five shots wins the game.

Bonners Ferry scored on all five shots, and Sugar Salem scored four out of five, with goalkeeper Seth Bateman’s save bringing the boys a Consolation Championship and a fourth-place trophy for the tournament.
