A host of Halloween events will provide all the little ghosts, ghouls and goblins with plenty of fun, activities and treats for all.
First, trick-or-treat the Daily Bee between 2-5 p.m. today, where staff will be ready with lots of treats for the little ones — and the not so little ones, as long as there is a costume involved.
"As a member of the local community, the Bee staff wants to join in on the Halloween festivities and looks forward to seeing all the kiddos in their costumes," said Alsy Brinkmeyer, advertising director and general manager of the Daily Bee.
Then, check out the many other Halloween happenings throughout the community.
- From 3:30-4:30 p.m., Mayor Shelby Rognstad and city of Sandpoint employees invite school-age children to begin their Halloween celebrations with trick-or-treating at Sandpoint City Hall, 1123 Lake St. While supplies last, both first- and second-floor departments will be passing out candy. Stop at the Parks and Recreation Department on the first floor to pick up map and a ballot to vote for the best decorated department.
- Head over to Valley Vista and check out the jack-o'-lantern art created by the Lake Pend Oreille High School students. The jack-o'-lantern stroll will consist of about 30 works of pumpkin art, and LPOHS students will be volunteering from 4-6 p.m. to hand out candy to the youngsters.
- In Ponderay, Sandpoint Church of the Nazarene will "Light up the Night" with a free carnival for kids from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The church is located north of Walmart on Highway 95 in Ponderay. A free dinner will be held and there will be drawings for awesome prizes all night long. There will be a Kids’ Zone with age appropriate games for youngsters 0-5 years old, a balloon room, a cake walk, a balloon artist, free cotton candy provided by the Kiwanis Club, a bouncy house — weather permitting, and a game room to test your skills. In addition, there will be special appearances by Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers, so come get an autograph and photograph.
The carnival event offers a safe and warm trick-or-treating environment for kids of all ages. A canned food drive will also take place to help those in need. Those attending are asked to bring a can of food for the food bank.
- The congregation at Sandpoint United Methodist invites children and their parents to safe and fun trick-or-treating event as well, held in the church parking lot at Cedar Street and Boyer Avenue in Sandpoint. The "trunk-or-treat" event will run from 5-7 p.m. and all are welcome. The parking lot will be filled with cars and trucks full of goodies and friendly folks handing out treats to the kids. Parents can enjoy a cup of coffee, spiced cider, or hot chocolate while the kids make the rounds.
- The Bonner County History Museum, in conjunction with the Sandpoint Lions Club, will host their fifth annual Trick-or-Treat at the museum and Lion’s Den. The museum will be open from 4-7 p.m. for trick-or-treating and experiencing the museum decked out in its festive best. The Lion’s Den will have warm drinks and sweet treats for those needing a little break from the weather. Admission to both is free.
Trick-or-Treat at the Museum is a great way for the museum to fulfill its mission of “history creating community.” Every inch of the museum is tricked out in its Halloween best, while volunteers hand out candy and school supplies to the spooky visitors. Each year the museum sees over 500 visitors on Halloween night.
- Trick-or-treating at the Bonner Mall in Ponderay starts at 4 p.m., with a costume contest at 6 p.m. Cash prizes in two age categories: 6 and under, and 7 to 12 years, for scariest, funniest, most original and best overall.
- Following all the trick-or-treating fun, spooky films will begin at 7 p.m. in the Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., with "Night of the Living Dead" and the re-mastered original "Halloween" in a double feature on Halloween night. Admission is $12 for the double feature, and $7 for one movie. Purchase tickets in advance at Panida.org.
Finally, don't forget to look out for all the little ones who will be out and about. The Sandpoint Police Department announced Monday that Lincoln Street between Pine and Ontario will be closed to vehicle traffic from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. this evening to allow safe passage of trick-or-treaters.
