WENATCHEE — With Labor Day weekend a busy time for travel during the year, the Washington State Patrol will be ramping up their emphasis patrols and directing resources to put troopers in local areas with heavy traffic and calls for service.

Trooper Brian Moore said troopers will be focusing on distracted driving violations. Washington’s new distracted driving law, which went into effect in July, sets a fee schedule for drivers who are found to be driving while distracted. The law states drivers are not allowed to use a hand-held device while driving, stopped in traffic or at a stoplight. Violators of the law could face a $136 fine.

“Distracted drivers are a leading cause of collisions in the state. Troopers will be looking for drivers talking on their cellphones or texting.” Moore said. “Drivers are reminded to slow down, watch their following distance and avoid unsafe lane changes. These violations greatly increase the likelihood of a collision, which will restrict the flow of traffic, preventing travelers from getting to their destination in a timely manner.”

In addition to homing in on distracted drivers, troopers will be focusing on removing impaired drivers from area roads. Moore said speed and impairment are the leading causes of traffic fatalities.

“Please be patient and allow extra travel time this Labor Day weekend. The Washington State Patrol wants you to have a safe and fun holiday weekend,” Moore remarked.
