SANDPOINT — Two men have been arrested for allegedly opening fire on two teenagers fly fishing Priest River on Tuesday evening.

A 13-year-old was shot in the right leg in the hail of gunfire, which erupted at a fishing spot off West Settlement Road at about 7:30 p.m., according to court and dispatch records. He was treated at Newport Community Hospital and released, Bonner County sheriff’s officials said in a news release.

Sheriff’s officials identified the two suspects as Eric R. Wood and Leo Michael Inwood. The sheriff’s office said the pair is facing charges related to the incident, although they were still pending on Wednesday, according to the Idaho Supreme Court Data Repository.

Wood, 52, was initially arrested for obstructing deputies for attempting to conceal his involvement in the incident, but the charge was later dismissed, court records show.

The teens, both 13, told investigators that they rode a Honda scooter to the fishing spot, which they had permission to use. While fishing the river, they observed two males shooting at the scooter with a handgun from the porch of a home that was under construction, probable cause affidavit said.

When the shooting subsided, they got back on the moped and one of the subjects opened fire with a rifle, striking one of the teens in the right leg, according to court documents.

The teens ended up crashing the moped in the attempt to flee because one of its tires was damaged by gunfire, the affidavit said.

At the hospital, an X-ray showed a small-caliber bullet lodged in the teen’s right femur.

Wood denied involvement in the incident when he was questioned by a detective and denied there were firearms in the residence, court records indicate. Wood said neighbors had been shooting throughout the day and added that unsupervised construction workers could have also been the source of the gunfire.

The neighbors, however, reported that they heard the peal of gunfire and saw a gray Dodge pickup truck leave the area at a high rate of speed, according to court documents.

Wood denied Inwood was with him, although that statement was contradicted by the home’s owner, who identified Inwood as a masonry contractor at the residence, the affidavit said. A deputy also discovered an expended shotgun shell on the floor of the home, which contradicted his insistence there were no firearms in the home, court records indicate.

Wood was arrested on the obstruction charge and sheriff’s officials said he admitted to opening fire. Sheriff’s officials said Inwood was arrested on Wednesday on jailed on a firearm charge related to the incident.

A motive for the shooting could not be found in court documents on Wednesday.

Wood and Inwood are expected to make initial appearances in Bonner County Magistrate Court today.
