SANDPOINT — A Coolin man who was shot and killed by Bonner County sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday was fired upon after pointing a handgun at them, Idaho State Police said on Friday.

State police said in a news release that Craig Albert Johnson was negotiating with law officers over the phone and via a police vehicle’s public address system when he emerged from the home with a loaded pistol and pointed at them, prompting deputies to respond with deadly force.

Johnson, 50, immediately received first aid because an ambulance had been staged nearby as a precaution and arrived within a few minutes, ISP said. Johnson succumbed to his injuries while being driven in the ambulance to a landing zone for a Life Flight air ambulance, state police said.

State police also on Friday identified the deputy who shot Johnson as Shawn Deem, who has been with the sheriff’s office for eight and a half years. Deem was not the deputy who conducted the welfare check, according to Bonner Dispatch records.

Deem and other deputies who were involved on Tuesday’s incident have been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated by the North Idaho Critical Incident Task Force, which is a standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.

State police said Johnson’s wife, Robin, asked the sheriff’s office on Sunday night to conduct a welfare check after being unable to contact him or receive return phone calls from him. A deputy responded to Johnson’s residence on Private Drive to determine if he was OK, ISP said.

“Craig Johnson immediately confronted the deputy by pointing a handgun at him and threatening him. The deputy sought cover behind his vehicle until he was able to safely retreat and leave the property,” state police said in a news release.

Johnson became the subject of a $30,000 arrest warrant for aggravated assault, a felony. Deputies were attempting to serve the warrant when the deadly confrontation occurred, state police said.

State police said the gun Johnson pointed at deputies was found to be loaded.
