Dennis note: The Columbia Basin Irrigation Project was of interest around the world as it was being built and for many years after completion. The interest, displayed below, demonstrates the extent of importance and significance the project was to other countries and especially to those living and farming in the Columbia Basin. Read on.

95 foreigners visit project

Activities of the Columbia Basin Project were observed or participated in by 95 foreign visitors from 23 foreign countries in 1964, project officials noted here today.

First foreign visitors to the project this year were Carlos Amarante, an engineer from Brazil, and Selahaltin Hazer, also an engineer from Turkey. Both Amarante and Hazer were here this past week and placed emphasis on their visit to the construction in irrigation block 81 on Royal Slope.

Length of visitation ranged from one day to several months for those seeing the project last year. Professional interest ranged from irrigation engineering to electrical engineering and hydrography.

DeMolay week noted by chapter

A full schedule of activities has been scheduled by the Moses Lake Chapter, Order of DeMolay, in celebrating National DeMolay week. Announcement of the schedule was made by Gary Lodeon, chapter master councilor.

Sunday the local DeMolays set aside as a religious obligatory day and attended St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. Tonight the group will visit the Ephrata chapter where officers will participate with Ephrata DeMolays in conferring first degree awards. Tomorrow night, at an informal meeting in the Masonic Temple, a colored film about DeMolay will be shown and chapter activities discussed. Refreshments at this session will be served by the DeMolay Mothers’ Club.

Saturday the group will go to Tacoma and participate in a two-day program that includes fraternal, religious, athletic and social events.

Coach Deane paid his way

Dick Deane, coach of the Moses Lake High School wrestling team, left a sickbed Saturday to drive to Seattle and then had to pay his way into Hec Edmundson Pavilion to watch his boys win their fifth state championship.

Assistant Coach John Wagner was using the coach’s pass. Deane arrived Saturday afternoon and paid to get in. After the dinner recess, he returned to the tournament site and had to pay again.

Local Moses Lake News

-Lewis Wetzell of Almira is visiting his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Wetzell.

-Lawrence Vance is visiting here this weekend. He is now employed by the Boeing Aircraft Company in Seattle.

-Cars from Ferry, Chelan, Adams, Douglas and other counties were observed here during the boat races Sunday afternoon.
