ROYAL CITY — Five high school junior girls will be vying for the title of Miss Royal City on Saturday, April 14.

Ana Villafana is contestant number one. She is the daughter of Ana Villafana. For her talent she will be performing a Mexican traditional dance. She decided to participate in the program after discussing it with a friend who encouraged her to run. Participating in the program has helped her learn how to speak in public, Ana explained.

Contestant number two is Elsa Trujillo Ramirez. Elsa is the daughter of Valentina Ramirez. For her talent she will be reciting a monologue that she wrote about how one person can change the world. Elsa was inspired to run for Miss Royal City by her cousin who had also participated in the program before. Her favorite part of participating in the program, she said, is having the opportunity to get to know the other contestants and interacting with them.

Elizabeth Guadarrama is contestant number three. She is the daughter of Araceli Vicente. For her talent she will be performing a flapper style dance to the song “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody,” by Fergie. Guadarrama had been in the audience for previous programs as a kid, and was inspired to run because the winner is able to represent the community, she said. If chosen as Miss Royal City, Guadarrama hopes to inspire others as well.

Contestant number four is Elizabeth Esparza. Elizabeth is the daughter of Enedina Angulo and Jesus Esparza. For her talent she will be signing to the song “Wings” by Little Mix. Elizabeth said she was scared to run for Miss Royal City at first, but with the encouragement of her friends she decided to go for it and has enjoyed the experience.

Fernando Gomez-Diaz is contestant number five. Fernando was unavailable for comment before press time.

The Miss Royal City Scholarship Program will be held at the Red Rock Elementary Gym. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The program is scheduled to begin at 7. Tickets for the annual event will be available for purchase from each of the contestants, and at Harvest Foods as well. Pre-sale tickets are $10. They are $12 at the door.

Contestants selected into the Miss Royal City Court will then represent Royal City at upcoming parades throughout the coming summer. Volunteers are still needed to help chauffeur the court to parades. A driver is also needed to drive the parade routes for the court that will be riding in a vehicle instead of a float this year. Anyone interested in volunteering to drive or chauffeur is asked to contact Lisa Christensen or Sabrina Christensen.
