Weather canceled softball all over Montana on April 6, but not in Libby, where Lady Logger pitcher and senior Khalyn Hageness held Mission-Arlee-Charlo to three runs with three struck out.

Not content with victory on the mound alone, Hageness hit a homerun in the second inning, scoring three runs for Libby.

Libby junior Jayden Winslow also had a good day, going 4-for-4 at the plate and scoring three runs, two of them in the first inning with a double.

In the first inning, Libby sophomore Shayla Gallagher hit a triple that scored two runs from Haylee Cannon and Emily Carvey.

Libby Head Coach Dean Thompson said that despite the one-sided score, the Class B Mission is a tough team.

“Mission, they are a good team,” Thompson said. “They are very well coached, and she does a great job with their kids.”

In past years, the Lady Loggers have faced the Lady Bulldogs in championship and state play, he said. “They’re a good team. It’s fun to watch them play.”

Getting 16 hits against Mission was a significant accomplishment, he said.

Thompson also called out the effort he has seen from the infield, most of whom are playing new positions this year.

“We made some great plays. Emily (Carvey) had a couple great plays at third base — that one shot right to her — Jayden (Winslow) is coming into her own at shortstop — she made a great grab, just didn’t get the throw down, but I’m telling you what, she did well,” he said.

There had been some talk of canceling the game, Thompson said, but he credited the support from ground crew and parents for getting the field ready for play despite the bitter cold.
