The Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce’s annual Top Scholars Upbeat Breakfast on April 10 honored the 50 top-ranking high school students from five area high schools.

The students and their parents were invited, and the event drew a crowd of 250.

Three $1,000 scholarships, provided by Spokane Teachers Credit Union, North Idaho Consortium for Higher Education and Coleman Engineering, were awarded.

Nineteen students competed for the scholarships through an application process requiring a written essay about their plans for the future, grade point standing, references and a resume.

Education committee chair Frances Huffman said it was a difficult decision to pick the final three, with many hours spent reviewing a wealth of outstanding applications.

Scholarships were awarded to Maya Zollman, Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy; Zack Bullock, Coeur d’Alene High School; and Abbigail Shrontz, Coeur d’Alene High School.

Coeur d’Alene 2017 Teacher of the Year Shelby Randklev spoke to the group at the breakfast. A Title 1 reading teacher and reading specialist at Fernan STEM Academy, Randklev’s philosophy is “Do what is best for kids.”

The breakfast was sponsored by STCU.
