MOSES LAKE — Five young women are trying to bring a little joy and nostalgia to senior citizens in the Moses Lake area with a capella renditions of classics from their audience’s era.

Comprised of two sets of sisters, Jamy, Emily and Ashley Macken sing alongside Esther and Phebe Horat to make up the Faithful Five. The oldest, Esther, is 20, while the youngest, Ashley, is only 10. The girls formed the group with the guidance of Esther and Phebe’s mother, Brenda Horat, about two years ago, but had for years already sung together in church.

The group began with an album dedicated to Dave Macken, who is Jamy, Emily and Ashley’s father, for his 40th birthday. The name Faithful Five was a dedication to him. The album was a compilation of his favorite hymns and special music sung by the girls in church.

The girls are natural singers, often singing from the moment they get in the car to drive to a performance to the moment they get back home, Brenda said. During road trips they often get out and sing at rest stops. Taking the next step toward becoming volunteer performers was a natural one for the girls.

The Faithful Five don’t just sing during their performances, either, putting on a production complete with costumes, props and sets made by the group that cycle with the songs. Whether its storefronts made out of refrigerator boxes for Woodie Guthrie’s “Crawdad Song,” or hand-painted prop surfboards for The Beach Boys’ “Surfin’ Safari,” the group comes ready for a show.

The group’s dedication to volunteering to entertain seniors was Brenda’s idea, which she hoped would engage the girls with a creative project that also got them involved in their community. Several members of the Horat family have needed the care of an assistant-living facility, giving Brenda some insight into what might brighten the lives of the disabled and elderly.

Much of the equipment that Brenda and her husband hasn’t paid for out of pocket has been loaned or donated by local businesses, who are sponsored on the programs of the group’s performances, and the Faithful Five does not charge for performances.

“The girls sing songs to be a blessing to the congregation and to those we minister to in the assisted living community,” Brenda said. “We just want to go and bring a little joy to their lives.”

Most importantly, Brenda said, they want to inspire others in the community to volunteer their time in support of those in assisted-living facilities.

The Faithful Five will be performing 3 p.m. Tuesday at Brookdale Hearthstone Moses Lake, a local assisted living community.

Editor’s note: This version clarifies that the group’s album and the group name was dedicated to Dave Macken.
