OTHELLO — Quincy had Selah on the ropes earlier in the season and failed to put the Vikings away. On Saturday, they left nothing to chance with a 4-nil victory over Othello to keep pace in the Central Washington Athletic Conference playoff chase.

In other action, East Valley (8-2-2, 4-1 CWAC) clipped Ellensburg (6-4, 3-2) and Selah (9-1-1, 5-0) beat Toppenish (10-2, 4-1) to tighten the screws at the top. Both matches were decided 1-0.

So Saturday’s victory over a Columbia Basin rival leaves the Jacks (5-3-3, 4-1 CWAC) in good shape going down the stretch to the postseason.

“Today was important to give us the mindset that we can beat anyone on the league. If we can beat Toppenish (on Tuesday), we’ll move up closer to first place,” Quincy coach Arturo Guerrero said. “We had a good feeling and we played together today. As we go on, we’re getting better and better.”

The Huskies (6-4-1, 1-4 CWAC) have lost three of their last four and need help to make the postseason.

“If we can win out and Grandview loses two, we’ll squeak into the playoffs in the sixth spot,” Othello coach Bernie Garza said. “Right now, we’re struggling with defensive mistakes.”

The Jacks capitalized on a Huskies miscue on all four goals. Midfielder Arturo Aramburo was credited with the goal, but it was in fact an own-goal by Othello in the second minute. Quincy had a break away 15 minutes later and Yordi Coronel finished to make it 2-0 midway into the match.

“We distributed the ball well today. I thought our passing was crisp,” Guerrero said. “The game was kind of sporadic because of the way it was called. We had four yellows and a red card.

“But we controlled the middle and moved the ball around well.”

Othello slugged along, getting to the intermission, trailing just 2-0, but Quincy striker Bryan Coronel found the net in the opening minute of the second half to pretty much eliminate the chance of comeback. Adrian Borja added one more in the 79th minute.

“All four of their goals were made on defensive mistakes today,” Garza said. “They had 15 shots on goal against us today and we had zero shots on goal in the second half, with the wind. We just were not in sync.”

Othello did have six shots for the day. Miguel Silva had five saves for the Huskies and Tyson Beaumont pretty much had the day off, making just one save.

“Today was a good day and things are going basically as planned,” Guerrero said. “Our only lose so far is to Selah, which we led. But we learned from our mistakes.

“We possess the right timing on our shots and we’re finishing so much better this year. I like what I see right now.”
