There are reports of large elk herds seen around Mineral County. Jill Pestana who lives in St. Regis, recently reported seeing several separate herds throughout the valley. During this time of year herds move from wintering grounds into spring calving areas.

“It’s a fun time of year for me to get out and count the elk during the spring green-up,” said Fish, Wildlife and Parks biologist, Liz Bradley in a previous interview. “This is when there’s a lot of lush grass which draws elk out of the mountains and they congregate at the lower levels. This is especially important for this area (Mineral County) because there isn’t a lot of wide open spaces to see them.”
