QUINCY — A Quincy man was arrested over the weekend after reportedly attempting to flee from police, crashing into a canal and attempting to hide from officers under a bush.
About 9 a.m.. Sunday morning Quincy officers were contacted by deputies and dispatchers to help locate a wanted vehicle that was “expected” to come through the Quincy area. The vehicle, a Chevrolet Malibu, was spotted by officers and police attempted to get the driver, alleged to be 43-year-old Santiago Vazquez, to pull over.
Vazquez allegedly drove recklessly through residential streets and ran several stop signs. Santiago reportedly started heading toward George at speeds in excess of 100 mph. He then made a right turn onto Road 7 Northwest, where he reportedly reached speeds in excess of 110 mph.
“Quincy police, out of concern for the public’s safety, were about to call off the pursuit when a citizen flagged the officer down and told him the vehicle had crashed in a canal in the area of Road V NW. Upon reaching the car, officers found the suspect had already fled the scene into a nearby orchard,” stated the QPD in a news release.
Officers and deputies surrounded the location and Santiago was reportedly found hiding under a bush that was covered by sagebrush. Santiago had an outstanding Department of Corrections warrant out for his arrest for escape of community custody and he was booked into the Grant County Jail on the warrant and for attempted felony eluding.
