April 22, 1968 — TRACK MEET NOT HELD

The long-awaited track meet that was to have inaugurated the new running oval at Sandpoint High School Saturday was literally dissolved in an unfortunate deluge of rain, snow and sleet.

LAKE LEVEL STUDY REQUESTED

Directors of the Shoreline Taxpayers Assn of Bonner County will discuss support of the request recently made by the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce to fix 2056 feet above sea level as the lowest elevation to which Lake Pend Oreille may be drawn each winter. The noon no-host luncheon is set for next Thursday.

CANDIDATES OFFER VIEWS

Four men who have announced intentions of filing for the Republican nomination to the First District state senate seat appeared before Bonner County Young Republicans Tuesday night.

Intending to run are Les Brown, Sandpoint, Frank Findlay, Cocolalla, James Hunt, Sandpoint and Peter B. Wilson, Bonners Ferry.

GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATION

An open house will be held next Sunday at home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Shadel, Route 1, Samuels, in observance of their golden anniversary. All friends of the Shadels are invited to attend.

Pend d’Oreille Review

April 22, 1918 — USE MORE POTATOES

Help consume the 1917 record breaking potato crop. Government experts estimate over 700,000 extra acres of potatoes were planted last year. The U.S. Food Administration is endeavoring to push the nation’s big potato stocks into channels of trade and has placed potatoes on the list of substitutes that may be bought along with wheat flour. Potato soup has become a war dish.

16 SERVICE FLAGS UNFURLED

At Granite Saturday a service flag was unfurled for 16 young men of that neighborhood in various branches of Uncle Sam’s war service. As the men’s names were called family members came forward and placed a star for their relative in the service. In one case a grandmother placed four stars in the flag for her four soldier grandsons. She said she had given her husband in the Civil war and had hoped never to live to see another war, but she was proud of her grandsons who had taken up arms in their country’s cause.

MUST MAKE SEWER CONNECTIONS

At Monday’s city council meeting, Marshal Young was authorized by the city fathers to see that connections are at once made with the city sewer by property owners who have not as yet put in connections. All offenders must connect up with the city sewer on penalty of arrest.
