Cultural heritage program May 1 at NIC

The public is invited to North Idaho College for a presentation from the U.S. Department of State’s Laura A. Tedesco, a cultural heritage preservation and museum rehabilitation specialist, from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at NIC’s Edminster Student Union Building Driftwood Bay Room.
Tedesco’s work focuses primarily on conflict and post-conflict regions in Asia and the Middle East. The topic of the May 1 presentation will be “A Career Following Destruction: Restoring and Preserving Cultural Heritage in Afghanistan and South and Central Asia.”
Recently back from Afghanistan, Tedesco’s presentation will address her work in preserving and restoring cultural heritage to a country at its physical sites as well as music, literature and art. This work involves combating the sophisticated illicit network of looting archaeological sites and the problems with the trafficking in antiquities in the region. She will explore topics such as how decisions are made on what heritage sites to restore and when it is safe to do so. Her presentation will be accompanied by pictures of historic sites where she is currently working and has previously worked. Tedesco will also talk about her career with the U.S. State Department.
Tedesco is currently the Cultural Heritage Program manager for South and Central Asia for the U. S. Department of State. She holds a doctorate in anthropology with a minor in archaeology from New York University. She was associate museum educator for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Her awards include the Superior Honor Award from the U.S. Department of State for sustained extraordinary performance and the Hagop Kevorkian Fellowship in Ancient Near Eastern Art from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The event is free and open to the public. There will be time for questions and answers at the end of the presentation.
