MOSES LAKE — First-year Moses Lake head coach Donnie Lindgren took his hat off, rubbed his forehead, then realigned it again Friday night at Larson Playfield after the Chiefs swept Wenatchee with a dominant display of baseball that included an eight-RBI single game by senior Cody Goodwin in the second game.
“To tell you the truth, when you come from a program that had (BJ) Garbe, (Jason) Cooper and (Ryan) Doumit, those guys could have had eight home runs in a single game,” said the first-year skipper who’s team moved into first in the CBBN with the sweep. “But in my era (which is still in its first season), I say it’s a record.”
Call it what you want, being compared to three guys from Moses Lake that went in the first 63 players selected in the 1999 Major League Draft says a little something.
“That was pretty crazy. I didn’t realize I had eight RBI,” Goodwin said. “After losing to these guys (on Tuesday), we got real hungry and practiced hard the past two days. We, obviously, prepared pretty well.”
Austin Valdez and Evan McLean combined for a one-hit, shutout in a 5-0 first game. Moses Lake produced 17 runs on 14 hits with an incredible 16 RBI in a 17-3 game that ended in five innings.
As well as the pitchers threw, allowing only one hit in the opener and eight in the second for a combined nine hits on the day. As well as designated hitter Emmitt Tatum kept the pressure on, reaching base six times, four times in the late game alone, and scoring five times. As well as the infield played, including a double play with runners on first and third to get out of a jam.
The day belonged to the senior catcher and watching Goodwin was like pulling on the slot machine arm and seeing money come out every, single time. Goodwin stroked a 3-RBI double in the bottom half of the second. He doubled again in the third to drive in three runs. Goodwin, who hits out of the No. 4 hole, had a two-out single in the fourth to drive in a couple more to finish the game 3-for-4 with two extra bases and eight RBI.
“Cody is the emotional, the vocal leader of this team. If there’s anybody that’s even close to talking as much as me, it’s him,” said Lindgren, whose team improved to 14-3 overall, 12-3 in league play. “He’s done a really good job in leading this team. He’s been right there helping us get a step closer to the league championship and I’m super happy for him having the game of his life.”
With the sweep, the Panthers are now 11-6, 11-4 CBBN.

The Chiefs finished with 16 RBI in five innings. Dax Lindgren (2), Evan McLean (2), Zack Valdez (3), Josh Williams (1) and Goodwin (8) made it a long day for a team that used three pitchers in four innings.
“We just want to get better and keep climbing the stairs,” said Tatum, who was 2-for-3 and scored four times. “We’re never going to look past anybody and we’re never going to be scared of anybody. We know that we can play with anybody. We knew we were going to come back and get these guys after losing to ‘em on Tuesday.”
Dominic Signorelli, Zack Valdez, McLean and Tatum had two-hit days.
