EPHRATA — You might want to write this name down, Bo Hesse.

The 6-foot-5 Ephrata sophomore spent most of his season on the junior varsity team. He had a couple of varsity starts, but on Saturday the big right-hander threw a perfect game against Quincy at Johnson-O’Brien Stadium in the final game of the CWAC regular season.

It’s hard to say whether Tigers coach Jason Laugen was giving ace Trenton Kleyn the day off or discovering his next pitching sensation, but Hesse was perfect with no runs, no hits in five innings with a 10-0 decision.

“He did a real good job of keeping the ball down and his curve kept them off balance for most of the day,” Laugen said. “He’s had a couple of varsity starts this year against Prosser and Othello, but for the most part he’s been on the JV. I thought he handled himself well and kept to the process.”

The No. 4 seed Tigers (14-6, 13-5 CWAC) guaranteed themselves a home game in the opening round of this week’s CWAC district tournament. They will host No. 5 Prosser (12-8, 10-8) on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in one of the loser-out games. No. 6 Othello (10-10, 9-9) will play No. 3 East Valley (15-5, 14-4) in Yakima at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

“We’ve had the lead twice against Selah and they came back and beat us, so it’s not like we can’t play with them. We beat East Valley (April 24), but it wasn’t enough to change the order in the seeding, so we feel pretty good going into the tournament,” Laugen said. “We rested Trenton Kleyn today because he’s a little sore and we want him ready for the tournament.

“And we end up getting a perfect game from Bo. Gunnar Falstad has been throwing exceptionally well. He threw a complete game against East Valley last week, and now with Bo we have three strong pitchers moving forward.”

Mac Laird has been seeing the ball exceptionally well in the second half of the season. He finished the second game with two hits after going 3-for-4 in the opener. The Tiger third baseman is just a sophomore, so couple him with Hesse, and the Tigers have a nice base for things to come.

Where the Ephrata young guys stepped up, Tigers senior Zac Berryman showcased why he’s headed to Walla Walla Community College next fall. He had a double and scored twice in the first game and had a hit in the second to go into the tournament on a roll. Laird doubled and Travis Robertson singled to jump-start the Tigers’ six-run third inning in the first game.

For Quincy senior Kade Schutzmann, it was his last game as a Jack. He’s headed to Wenatchee Valley Community College next fall and finished the final doubleheader of his high school strong with a single, stolen base and run scored in the opener.

“The season wasn’t what we were hoping for. We lost some close games,” Schutzmann said. “We started picking things up lately and finished playing really good baseball. I’m seeing the ball really well. I just had to make a few adjustments, but l felt good today.”
