SANDPOINT — A Type 3 Incident Management Team is slated to take command of the Alpine Fire today, the Idaho Department of Lands reports.

The lightning-caused fire started on July 28 and grew from 30 acres to 75 acres as of Friday. The fire is burning on industrial timberland in high-elevation subalpine fir about a mile and a half north of Caribou Lake, which is approximately 11 miles north of Sandpoint.

There was no containment on Friday. No structures are currently being threatened, according to IDL. Hazards include steep terrain and dead standing trees.

The Type 2 crew working the fire constructed fire lines using a bulldozer, excavators and hand crews.

“Some spotting has occurred across the line and crews are working to contain the spots. As a preventative measure, a fuel break is being constructed beyond the fire line to reduce the threat of the fire’s spread,” IDL said in a fire update.

Aircraft are being utilized to drop water and retardant along fire lines and on hot spots.

Temperatures are predicted to be cooler than the past several days, with a high of 67 degrees forecast for today. Winds are predicted at 4-7 mph with gusts up to 14 mph. There is a 30-percent chance of thunderstorms, which could produce heavy rain, lightning and wind gusts up to 30 mph.

There are currently no road or area closure, IDL said.

“Despite the cooler temperatures, the conditions in the forests are still very dry. Use caution and adhere to all restrictions to help us protect our forests and keep the public and our firefighters safe,” the agency said.

Cooperating agencies on the fire include the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, Bonner County Office of Emergency Management, Idaho Office of Emergency Management, the U.S. Forest Service and the Northside Fire District.
