SANDPOINT — The Festival at Sandpoint’s Community Orchestra, featured at the Family Concert on Sunday, Aug. 5, includes musicians of all ages and abilities, and some come from afar.

The Festival at Sandpoint invited three students from Mexico who are here to participate in the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint’s International Youth Orchestra Camp which takes place Aug. 6-10, headed up by Karin Wedemeyer who was pleased to accept the invitation to collaborate. Yul Galvan Coto will play the clarinet, Alejandro Rocha Schiaffino will play the oboe and Salvador Lara Ochoa will play the flute.

These three Mexican students join an ensemble of 48 talented players of all ages from Sandpoint, Coeur d’Alene, Spokane. There are two Canadian students in the group, Meagan and Taija Bibby who study with Jason Moody and Amanda Anderson and the following local students: Daniel Cathey who studies bassoon with Lynne Feller-Marshall, Austin Kemmis who studies trombone with Jessica Hanna, Ada Anderson who studies violin with Beth Weber, Sadie Dignan who studies viola with Karen Dignan and Sophie Dignan studies cello with Karen Dignan. Maestro Gary Sheldon will lead the orchestra with Jason Moody as Concertmaster. Beth Weber is the Orchestra Master and Librarian.

The Festival’s Family Concert is musical fun for the young and young at heart! The musical program “Once Upon A Time, Favorite Musical Stories,” includes music from Sleeping Beauty, Pirates of the Caribbean, Coppelia, the Nutcracker and more with Studio 1 Dance Academy performing.

Favorite pre-concert activities include the Instrument Petting Zoo where kids can try out various instruments with guidance from musical mentors, an animal petting zoo, pony rides, clowns, face painting, games galore and the popular Parents’ Corner where moms and dads can take a break from the chaos for a complimentary mini-massage.
