PRIEST RIVER — A Priest River man was arrested last Friday after allegedly sucker punching one woman and throwing a beer bottle in the face another.

Donavon Cleon “Gunner” Maupin is charged with two counts of misdemeanor battery. Maupin made an initial appearance in Bonner County Magistrate Court this past Monday via videoconferencing with the jail.

Judge Lori Meulenberg released Maupin on his own recognizance, court records show. Conditions of his pretrial release include abstaining from using alcohol or contacting the alleged victims in the case.

In the terms of his release, Maupin is also forbidden from picking up any new charges greater than an infraction.

Priest River Police officers were on foot patrol downtown shortly before 10:30 p.m. when they spotted the tail end of a commotion near The Jammer bar and a woman “covered” in blood, according to a probable cause affidavit. One of the alleged victims was sitting in the grass behind the bar when she encountered Maupin, who appeared to be spoiling for a fight, the affidavit said.

Maupin, 36, allegedly sucker punched a 44-year-old Sagle woman, prompting a 29-year-old Laclede woman to confront him, the affidavit said.

The Laclede woman told police Maupin threw the beer bottle in an overhand throw at her face. The bottle shattered above the woman’s left eye, according to the affidavit.

The Laclede woman’s brother, 27, tackled Maupin to the ground, court documents indicate.

Maupin told police that he was jumped, although other witnesses corroborated the alleged victims’ accounts, the affidavit states.

Maupin is scheduled to be tried on charges in October.
