GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Northwest League home run leader Curtis Terry sent 14 balls over the walls at Suplizio Field to capture the Home Run Derby title at the Northwest-Pioneer League All-Star Game Tuesday night.

The Spokane Indians first baseman needed only seven to take the crown over David Fry of the Helena Brewers, but he kept swinging for the full two minutes of the final round.

“It’s an honor to me, especially since this is my first All-Star Game,” Terry said. “I’m going to enjoy it to the fullest. I’m just grateful to be out here. It’s a great atmosphere and I’m loving it right now.”

Terry, who leads all Class A Short Season sluggers with 13 homers and a 1.030 OPS, started the contest with blasts in each of his first five swings in the opening round — enough to tie or beat four of the other five competitors after they used the full two minutes. He finished the round with 12 for a derby total of 26.

The Rangers prospect credits the work he did in extended spring training for the advances he’s made this season.

“We worked on how to hit breaking balls, how to lay off bad pitches. It’s helped me this season a lot,” he said. “That was fun, but now I gotta lock it in for the game.”

Fry, who has eight homers in 40 games this season and is among 15 Pioneer Leaguers with multi-homer games, knocked six in both rounds.

All-Star Game

Pioneer League 13, Northwest League 10: Spokane’s two starters in the Northwest League lineup were part of a hit parade in Tuesday night’s game, which saw each league’s roster of hitters collect 16 hits.

Indians third baseman Diosbel Arias batted leadoff for the Northwest League and went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Curtis Terry went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored as he played the entire contest at first base.

Spokane’s Francisco Ventura was a substitute at catcher and finished the game 0-for-2 with an RBI.

On the mound, Indians hurler Hans Crouse threw a 1-2-3 third inning — a rarity in this game — with two strikeouts. Teammate Emmanuel Clase didn’t fare as well, as he committed two errors during his eighth-inning appearance which helped the Pioneer League score four times in the frame, putting the hosts ahead for good. Clase also allowed a hit and recorded his only out via strikeout.

Nathan Eaton of the Idaho Falls Chukars led the Pioner League All-Stars with a 5-for-5 night that included a double, triple, four runs scored and two RBIs.

After a day off today for the all-star break, the Indians return to action at 6:15 p.m. PDT on Thursday at Boise.
