A Libby man who appeared to have been lying in Highway 2 near Kootenai Falls was killed early Thursday after being struck by a car.

The Montana Highway Patrol identified him as Chance Robert Hilliard, 34.

The crash occurred near the 20.9 mile marker about 2:10 a.m., Montana Highway Patrol Sgt. Neil Duram said Thursday evening by email.

Hilliard, who appeared to have been lying down in the westbound lane, was struck by a westbound Ford Tempo.

It wasn’t yet known why he was in the road, Duram wrote.

Blood samples were gathered to determine if alcohol or drugs were contributing factors, Duram wrote.

No criminal charges are pending at this time, he added.
