SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — It just wasn’t Coeur d’Alene’s day on Thursday in San Bernardino.
That’s fine.
Today’s a new day.
The Coeur d’Alene 12U Majors Little League team lost 5-2 to Arrowhead Little League of Billings, Mont., in the semifinals of the Northwest Regional tournament at Houghton Stadium, with temperatures nearing triple digits.
“The message I gave our kids was it was a great game to watch and play,” Coeur d’Alene coach Sean Cherry said. “We were hitting the ball hard, but just right at people. If I was in the stands, I would have loved to sit and watch the game.”
Christopher Reynolds had two hits for Coeur d’Alene, which faces Beaverton, Ore., today at noon in a semifinal game. The winner of today’s game advances to face Billings in the Northwest Regional final on Saturday at noon.
Both games will be broadcast on ESPN.
“We’re in a good position right now,” Cherry said. “We’re going to see them (Billings) again on Saturday. We’re in a good position to see them again on Saturday.”
Nolan Christ opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, scoring on a wild pitch for Coeur d’Alene. With the bases loaded, Austin DeBoer scored Avrey Cherry on a sacrifice bunt to give Coeur d’Alene a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.
“We were in a position where we traded a run for an out,” Cherry said of the bunt. “I knew Austin was going to get it down. He made it a little interesting with the ball only going a foot, but Avrey read the play very well and was able to score.”
Billings, keyed by a two-run single by Josh Sears to tie the game at 2-2 and Jakob Wilcox doubled to score Sears to give Billings the 3-2 lead after the third inning.
Billings added to its lead on a pair of errors in the bottom of the fifth to cap the scoring.
