Lakeland product Coffey among Vandals to land

preseason honors

CLEVELAND — Three Idaho football student-athletes were named to Phil Steele’s Preseason All-America Teams Friday, and five were selected as preseason All-Big Sky. Cade Coffey, Kaden Elliss and Noah Johnson earned recognition on both preseason All-America and all-conference teams.

Johnson, a junior offensive guard, was one of five offensive linemen named to Phil Steele’s Preseason All-America First Team. Elliss was a third-team choice at linebacker and Coffey was the third-team punter.

The trio was also named to Phil Steele’s Preseason All-Big Sky First Team. Also representing the Vandals were second-team all-conference choice Ed Hall (linebacker) and third-team selection D.J. Henderson (defensive line).

Coffey, a kicker/punter from Lakeland High, returns for his sophomore season after being named a USA Today Freshman All-American. His 44.6 yard-per-punt average in 2017 would have led the Big Sky. Coffey booted 20 of his 66 punts at least 50 yards and pinned the opposing offense inside its own 20 on 23 occasions.

Johnson has already started 22 games as a Vandal. He was named All-Sun Belt Second Team last season. In 2016, Johnson was a member of the Sun Belt All-Newcomer Team.

Elliss earned All-Sun Belt accolades each of the past two seasons. He enters his senior campaign with 228 career tackles, including 32 for loss and 10 sacks. Elliss has intercepted five passes, forced five fumbles, recovered three and blocked a kick. He is also expected to play an expanded role in the Vandal offense this season at tight end, where he caught seven passes last season for 156 yards and two touchdowns.

Hall enters his senior season with 178 career tackles, including 6.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks. He led the Vandals with three interceptions last season. He was an honorable mention All-Sun Belt choice as a junior.

Henderson made his Idaho debut last year after transferring from East Mississippi Community College. He appeared in 10 games as a junior, making 20 tackles from his interior line positiong, including 4.5 for loss and two sacks. Henderson also scored two rushing touchdowns as a full back in goal-line packages.
