COEUR d’ALENE — Idahoans longing for the good ol’ days of the 1990s can’t get enough of Austin Powers, said a Frontier Bundles report released Monday.
“Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me!” was the state’s No. 1 top-grossing ’90s film still being searched for in Idaho, outpacing rival flicks such as “Saving Private Ryan,” “Aladdin,” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
Analysts determined results by looking at Google Trends search data from the past year for the highest grossing films in the United States from 1990 to 1999.
Idahoans, famous for their quirky sense of humor thanks to the 2004 film “Napoleon Dynamite,” were alone with Coloradans, the only other state residents partial to the 1999 release of the second installment of the Austin Powers film series, featuring comedian Mike Myers. Ironically, moviegoers nostalgic for the Austin Powers movies of the ’90s are paying homage to the James Bond movies of the 1960s.
“The Lion King” ranked first in eight states, mainly in the South, while “Home Alone” dominated seven states across the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest. “Titanic” came in first place in five states scattered across the lower 48 from Oregon to Rhode Island, while “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” won four Western states, including Washington and Montana. “Saving Private Ryan” was a favorite in four states, mainly in the Northeast. Oklahomans ironically preferred “Twister” as their favorite ’90s movie, while Virginians liked “Independence Day,” the 1996 film that portrayed aliens blowing up the White House. Like California, which was the only state in the Union to pick “Aladdin,” Delaware was the lone state to choose “Toy Story 2,” and Florida went with “Men In Black.” Hawaii chose the original “Jurassic Park,” which was filmed there in 1992, as its favorite, but Arizona and Nebraska sank their teeth into the franchise’s second installment, “The Lost World.” Alaskans and Mississippians went with the story of Anakin Skywalker in “The Phantom Menace,” while New Yorkers and Nevadans chose Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze’s supernatural “Ghost” as their favorite, and Wyoming and Washington, D.C., expressed a preference for “Mrs. Doubtfire.” Georgia and South Carolina picked “Forrest Gump,” while North Dakota and Utah liked “Beauty and the Beast” the best.

Idaho regulators reject Hydro One deal
COEUR d’ALENE — Ontario politicians exert too much control over Hydro One for Idaho law to permit the $5.3 billion sale of Avista to Hydro One, the Idaho Public Utilities Commission said Thursday. “In this case, we find the applicants have failed to carry their burden under Idaho Code $ 6l-327.”
