Bayley fires 1-over 72 at U.S. Amateur

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Former Lakeland High and Washington State standout Derek Bayley shot a 1-over-par 72 at Pebble Beach Monday in the first round of the U.S. Amateur Championships, placing him in a tie for 43rd after the first day of the weeklong tournament.

All players complete two rounds of stroke play, one on the Pebble Beach Golf Links (which Bayley played Monday) and the other at Spyglass Hills Golf Course. The top 64 individuals advance to match play beginning Wednesday.

Bayley is five strokes behind first-round leaders Daniel Hillier of Australia and Trevor Phillips of the U.S. Both shot a 4-under-par 67 on Monday.

Scholwinski hired as CCS softball coach

SPOKANE — Lindsie Scholwinski has been chosen to be the next softball coach at Community Colleges of Spokane. Scholwinski is taking over for Paco Crandall who served as the head coach for the past two seasons. Lindsie is a graduate of Coeur d’Alene High school and was their head softball coach this past season.

Scholwinski was a pitcher at Community Colleges of Spokane from 2013-15. In 2015 she was named NWAC Baden player of the year, leading Spokane to the NWAC Championship. In that championship season, she posted a record of 29-0 with a 0.81 ERA. She also set the school record for single season strikeouts with 278.

Upon leaving Spokane, she attended Southeastern University. At Southeastern she set the single season strikeout record with 304 and helped lead them to a third-place finish at the 2016 NAIA World Series.

“I am beyond words for this opportunity and to return to my old stomping grounds,” Scholwinski said. “I am very excited and honored to coach this team and grow with them on and off the field every day. I am really looking forward to the things I am going to learn and the knowledge I get to share with the team also on and off the field. This is going to be an amazing year and I am excited to be a Squatch again and be a part of this program.”

Spokane Athletic Director Ken Burrus said, “Lindsie will make a great addition to the Sasquatch team. She is a driven competitor and a fine professional. We are excited about having her teach and coach for the Community Colleges of Spokane.”

Ron Loghry named Big Sky’s interim commissioner

OGDEN, Utah — The Big Sky Conference has announced that Ron Loghry will serve as the interim commissioner at the league office. Loghry has been with the league through its many accomplishments in his current role as deputy commissioner.

“The Big Sky Council of Presidents is very pleased that Ron Loghry has agreed to serve as the interim commissioner of the Big Sky Conference,” said Sacramento State President Robert Nelsen. “Ron has been a trusted leader in the commissioner’s office for over 23 years. He knows the League inside and out, and he has a strong command of the budget. As the search for the next commissioner progresses, Ron is the ideal person to maintain the momentum and build on the successes of the Big Sky Conference.”

The search has begun for the seventh commissioner in the league’s history. The commissioner shall be the chief administrative officer and executive officer of the conference. The commissioner will report to the presidents’ council and work with the conference council to advance the mission and strategies of the conference.
