SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — It had the makings of a win for Coeur d’Alene Little League as it held a three-run lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Up to that point, Coeur d’Alene kept the Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., potent lineup in check, striking out Jarren Purify twice and giving up just a handful of hits. It all changed in the sixth when a double from Preston Barr sparked a rally that gave the Great Lakes Region champion a 5-4 walk-off win during the second day of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.
The loss drops Coeur d’Alene into an elimination game today at 5 p.m. (ESPN) against Peachtree City, Ga., which lost an 11-inning marathon to Honolulu 2-0. It will be a quick turnaround for both teams, but Coeur d’Alene, which still has the majority of its pitching staff, should be a little more rested.
A short rain delay stopped play for both teams in the bottom of the first inning. The brief stoppage seemed to help Coeur d’Alene, playing in its first Little League World Series, as it scored three runs in the top of the second. Braeden Newby opened the inning with a single and came around and scored as Karl Schwarzer doubled and Caden Symons hit a two-run double.
“This was a wonderful, awesome baseball game,” Coeur d’Alene manager Sean Cherry said. “We had them and it faded away. This was as good as these guys were at playing today. A couple errors cost us and that’s just baseball.”
Coeur d’Alene’s starting pitcher Christopher Reynolds looked outstanding in 4 2/3 innings of work. He fanned Purify, a player intentionally walked to open the Great Lakes regional championship, twice. The team decided to go right after Purify and the results were exactly what it wanted.
“My pitch caller Steve Saunders spent hours and hours and hours going over tape and he put together a perfect plan to try and shut him down,” Cherry said. “That kid is legit. The plan was to bust him in hard and then go far away. The third time through the lineup when he hit that double was big. He’s just eventually going to beat you.”
Reynolds finished with 11 strikeouts, leaving only because he reached the pitch count limit of 85. He scattered three hits and shut the Michigan team down.
“He’s so sharp,” Cherry said. “Every time I put that guy on the mound he impresses me. What an outing tonight. It was incredible. He was dealing and this is a damn good hitting team. He should be very proud.”
Once Reynolds was pulled the Michigan team started to make its move as Purify laced a double to the wall. He quickly scored for Grosse Pointe Woods’ first run of the tournament. Coeur d’Alene’s large and loud crowd started to cool as the Michigan team’s fans opened up for the final inning.
Preston Barr hit a double to open the sixth and Cameron Schafer quickly followed with a single to cut the lead to 4-2. Jake Martin and Reggie Sharpe connected with singles and Ryan Knaebel played hero with a single into left field for a walkoff win.
“It was really quiet through the first five innings,” Grosse Pointe Woods player Cameron Shafer said. “It just got really loud. The crowd wasn’t really intimidating, but they got to my head a little, but I just tuned it out.”
Newby went 2 for 3 with a double and scored twice, and Schwarzer and Symons each doubled. Coeur d’Alene’s also stranded six runners in the game.
The game changed in the fourth when Purify made a diving catch on a line drive down the left field line. It would have easily scored both runners on base, but the play ended the inning.
“We were pretty flat and I was preparing for being on the other side of the press conference,” Grosse Pointe Woods manager Kurt Barr said. “We were absolutely tight out of the gate. The boys played in a way I haven’t seen them play in a long time. That play was a huge turning point for us.”
