Aug. 19, 1968 — ENDORSE APPLICATION

Sandpoint’s application for matching money for half the cost of a new Bridge St. span across Sand creek was unanimously endorsed by the Bonner Development Committee. Made under the economic development act, the city’s application is for the estimated costs of a new bridge for Sand creek, $37,500. Sandpoint proposes to match the amount through a levy. Application is based upon the effect of use of the city beach recreation area on the economy of Sandpoint and Bonner County. As many as 10,000 people have used the area over a single holiday weekend.

Present at the meeting were Jim Parsons, chairman of the tourism subcommittee, Mayor Floyd Gray, City Clerk Ken Hackworth, Glen Judge, Mrs. Forrest Wetterow, Harold Kiebert, Terry Stigle, Wayne Goin, James Brockway, Lee White, Jack Popplewell and Walt McPherson.

SANDPOINT STUDENTS TO EWSC

Three Sandpoint students have been admitted to Eastern Washington State College, Cheney, Wash., as freshmen for the fall quarter: Karen Knaggs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Knaggs, and Susan McConnaughey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harlow McConnaughey, Sandpoint, and Leslie Yaryan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Yaryan, Hope. Miss Knaggs will major in elementary education; Miss McConnaughey in education and Miss Yaryan in psychology.

Aug. 19, 1918 — PONY GOES FOR A SWIM

Consternation reigned with the young members of G.S. Helphrey’s household Saturday, when their pet Shetland pony swam across the lake from the foot of Second to the fish hatchery, a three mile distance. When they discovered him headed out into the lake they pursued him along the county bridge, and when he was half way over, persuaded him to turn back. He came part way, then changed his mind, turned about and swam to the hatchery. The children took an auto to the hatchery and brought him back by road.

NEW FIRE TRUCK ON THE JOB

The new two-ton Nash auto truck, purchased by the city council last week, has been equipped for hose-carrying and placed in commission at the fire station. Besides carrying the usual hose, the truck is outfitted with a chemical tank and equipment which has heretofore been on a separate vehicle and thus seldom taken out.

COMPULSORY MILITARY REGISTRATION

Sheriff Remer today issued a notice calling upon all male persons who will have, on or before the 24th day of August 1918, attained the age of 21 years, to register between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. Places of registration are the court house, Sandpoint; Wilkins’ drug store, Clarksfork; and the post office at Priest River.
