Aug. 23, 1968 — TRAILER HAVEN SHOW

The fourth annual hobby show, an event of interest to many summer visitors in the Trestle Creek area, held at Jeb and Margaret’s Trailer Haven, had 52 exhibitors, 11 of them men. Entries were in sewing, knitting, ceramics, pine needle craft, vegetables and flowers, tin can craft, jewelry, painting, flower arrangements, needlepoint, photography, coin and button collections, rod making and wood carving.

STILWELLS ARE GRANDPARENTS

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence D. Stilwell and family returned last week from a visit in Florence, Mont., with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. George (Jenise) Eskridge. They also made the acquaintance of their first grandchild, Robert Terry Eskridge, born Aug. 10 weighing 9 lbs. 9 oz.

FAIR EXHIBIT ENTRY TIMES

Fair exhibits are to be entered for the annual Bonner County Fair next week. Exhibits may be entered from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday evening, Aug. 28, to enable exhibitors who work daytime jobs to enter their exhibits and to spread out the entry of exhibits for 4-H superintendents. Exhibits will also be received from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday. All 4-H livestock entries must be entered by 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

Heavy rains in August are quite unusual and old-timers say it is the wettest August ever seen in this locality. The rains are doing much good to late pasture and will help out the fall gardens.

POTATOES IN SECOND BLOOM

H.L. Thomason, traveling through the county, noted that potatoes generally are in their second bloom, a most unusual occurrence and one that will result in a crop loss unless carefully handled.

When the same thing occurred in Montana a few years ago, almost the entire crop was lost by rot after it was dug and stored in bins and pits. It was learned then that potatoes that set with the second blooming are watery and unmature when dug. The only successful method of handling is to leave the potatoes undisturbed in the hills at least 7 days after a killing frost. The killing of the vines allows the potatoes to harden up and mature.

BATTERY C IN CHASE OF HUN

That Battery C is in the chase after the Hun was the word received yesterday from Ernest Lowery, with the 150th Division. His division went through cities and towns the Germans had evacuated. He saw piles of helmets four feet high and great piles of revolvers and guns, the Germans having left in great haste. A member of Company A, Lowery was taken ill before departure overseas and was in hospital at Halifax. On recovery, he was assigned to the 150th instead of the 146th.
