Back to the picks - we guess
Mark Nelke Sports Editor | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 7 years, 3 months AGO
Back by popular demand — or something like that — the Press sports staff, meaning myself and Jason Elliott, returns for a second season of predicting high school and, starting next week, college football games for teams in our area.
In season one, I was 80-36 overall, including 34-15 on college football picks (we picked games involving Idaho, Washington State, Boise State and Eastern Washington). Jason was 74-42 overall, 32-17 on college picks.
We’re still holding out hope the winner (and the runner-up, for that matter) will be treated to a prime rib dinner at the end of the season.
Until then, here goes (and believe me, at this point in the season, some of these are indeed guesses):
Coeur d’Alene at Rigby
NELKE: Rigby went 8-3 last season, losing 14-13 in the state 5A quarterfinals to Mountain View, a team Coeur d’Alene routed 39-13 the next week in the semifinals. The Vikings were hit hard by graduation following last year’s appearance in the state title game, but Coeur d’Alene tends to reload rather than rebuild. Rigby returns a little more experience. The Vikings will find out a lot about themselves early.
Coeur d’Alene, 32-24
ELLIOTT: While Coeur d’Alene might not have the familiar names they’ve had in previous years, these players have seen and played some snaps in recent years.
Coeur d’Alene, 35-24
Madison at Lake City
NELKE: Madison’s last game last season was in Coeur d’Alene, a 66-21 shellacking at the hands of the Vikings in the state quarterfinals. Lake City, 2-6 last year, is eager to improve after three straight losing seasons and may indeed do so, but there could be some growing pains along the way.
Madison, 28-14
ELLIOTT: Lake City learns a lot about itself this Friday night and where they’re going. They’ll take a step forward, but ...
Madison, 31-14.
Post Falls at Sandpoint
NELKE: Post Falls is coming off an 8-2 season, but lost most of that squad to graduation. Pretty much all the starters will be new this year, including the quarterback, where three are vying for the job. Sandpoint has a new coach in former Bulldog great Ryan Knowles, an assistant at Colgate the past 12 years after playing at Idaho. The 4A Bulldogs return a little more experience than do the 5A Trojans.
Sandpoint, 24-20
ELLIOTT: A quality source in Post Falls told me everything is up in the air right now. Which is good for football games. As far as this one ...
Sandpoint, 28-17
Kellogg at St. Maries
NELKE: Kellogg won the Intermountain League last year for the first time since 1973. The Wildcats suffered heavy graduation losses, but a few of last year’s key players return. St. Maries went 5-5 last year after winning the state 2A title in 2016, and are more experienced this year.
St. Maries, 26-22
ELLIOTT: This isn’t the Brawl for the Ball spirit games that the team put on during the winter, but it might feel like it.
St. Maries, 21-20
Kootenai at Troy
NELKE: Troy, 2-7 last year, is in 1A Division I, one division higher than Kootenai, which is coming off a 2-6 season.
Troy, 30-26
ELLIOTT: Kootenai is fired up about getting back to the North Star League this year. They’ll open league play next week at home against Clark Fork pretty excited.
Kootenai, 38-28
Wallace at Lakeside
NELKE: Without having to go through Deary and Kendrick anymore to get to the state playoffs, Lakeside is eager to challenge for its first playoff berth since 2001. Wallace, one division higher in 1A Division I, returns several key players from a 3-6 squad in a tough White Pine League. This could be an old-fashioned 8-man shootout.
Wallace, 52-44
ELLIOTT: As a native of Wallace, it’s hard to go against your alma mater. Someone in red and black — both schools colorso — will win.
Wallace, 24-22
Timberlake at Frenchtown (Mont.)
NELKE: Frenchtown went 7-3 last year, reaching the second round of the state playoffs. Timberlake figures to be better than its 1-7 record from last season.
Frenchtown, 30-20
ELLIOTT: Either Mark or I is going to be out to a little bit of a lead, with a long way to go in the season.
Timberlake, 28-20
