A new North Idaho wildfire — and one closer to the urban areas of Kootenai County — has sparked on the radar screen of local agencies.

The Hudlow Fire along Hayden Creek Road about a mile northeast of Hayden Lake was reported early Wednesday morning and grew to 10 acres by the afternoon.

"The focus is building a line to get it contained," said Mary Fritz, an Idaho Departments of Lands public information officer. "It's burning in the timber on steep terrain."

A press release issued by the Forest Service said the fire on Forest Service land is human-caused. However, the IDL, which has protection responsibility and is managing the initial attack, later issued an update stating the cause is under investigation.

Fritz said the fire was 0 percent contained as of early Wednesday afternoon. Two helicopters were providing water as needed. About 70 firefighters, three engines and one water tender were on scene.

No structures were being threatened.

The Northern Lakes Fire District initially responded to the fire at 12:30 a.m.

Due to difficult terrain and unsafe night operations, IDL and Forest Service crews monitored the fire overnight and returned later in the morning to attack the fire from both the ground and with helicopters.

Another new fire in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest on Wednesday was the Outlaw Fire in the St. Joe Ranger District that grew to 1 acre. It was attacked both on the ground and in the air.

Meanwhile, the Rampike Fire between Shoshone Creek and the Montana state line in the Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District was 2,400 acres on Wednesday and 0 percent contained.

The 2,631-acre Surprise Creek Fire east of Farragut State Park on the Bonner-Shoshone county line in the Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District was 20 percent contained.

The 6,626-acre Cougar Fire east of Hope in the Sandpoint Ranger District was 26 percent contained.
