Part of the process

COEUR d’ALENE — Logan Jeanselme made some nice catches — from both quarterbacks — and Zane Lettau powered into the end zone from 4 yards out in the game’s final minute for Lake City.
Normally, those would be footnotes, as the Timberwolves lost 42-6 to Madison of Rexburg in the season opener for both teams Friday night.
But when you’re in the process of turning around a program, you will look to build on any positives that you can.
“We let them take it to us a little bit at the beginning,” Lake City interim coach Brian Fulp said. “And we’re young at a lot of positions, but I liked the way they responded. The score might not show it, but they didn’t fold, they didn’t cave in, they didn’t start bickering with each other, and that’s the first step of this process.”
The Bobcats scored on their first three possessions and returned a fumble for a score en route to a 28-0 halftime lead.
Quarterback Jordan Porter, a returning first-team All-High Country Conference selection, passed for 217 yards and two touchdowns for Madison, and rushed for 89 yards and a score on 11 carries.
Madison totaled 398 yards, and scored on five of its eight possessions in the game.
Spencer Hathaway, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound tight end/linebacker who also handles the kicking chores, booted every PAT nearly out of the stadium, and put all but one of his kickoffs in the end zone.
“We’re very similar to last year,” Madison coach Mitch Buck said. “We lost a lot of defensive players, but we play a lot faster this year than we played last year, and that showed out here tonight. Offensively, we’re very similar, but we’re probably more sound up front, and our receiver corps has a little more versatility, and that helps us a lot.”
Madison, which lost at Coeur d’Alene in the state 5A quarterfinals last season, took the opening kickoff and drove 77 yards in 12 plays, capped by Karson Hastings’ 1-yard run.
On the Bobcats’ next possession, Porter avoided the blitz, stepped up and fired to Hastings, who scooted the rest of the way to complete a 34-yard scoring play.
On the next possession, Lake City sophomore quarterback Chris Irvin fumbled, and Madison linebacker Brigham Castillow scooped up the loose ball and dashed 26 yards for a 21-0 lead.
Jeanselme, a junior cornerback, picked off Porter twice — once in each half. His first pick was a leaping interception as he battled for the ball in the air with Madison wideout Mason McWhorter.
Late in the fourth quarter, Jeanselme raced down the sideline and hauled in a 49-yard completion from Irvin to the Madison 4. On the next play, Lettau, who finished with 99 yards on 21 carries, barrelled around the right end for the score.
“Logan had a great game — two picks, and one of them was an amazing one,” Fulp said. “And he made a great catch down the sideline, too.”
Before that, Lake City moved the ball well at times, but only threatened to score one other time — turning the ball over on downs at the Bobcats’ 20.
“Overall, we need to be better top to bottom, obviously — coaches, players, everybody,” Fulp said. “But we’ve got to do the little things right, and we’ll get there. It’s the first step in a long process.”
Lake City plays host to Lewis and Clark of the Greater Spokane League next Friday.
