The Sandpoint Renaissance Faire is almost here, and we are honored to have Queen Elizabeth Tudor visiting. In our latest conversation, we spoke about the navy she and her father built. I asked her about the recently-launched supercarrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, which is now conducting sea trials in the Atlantic.

“Verily it pleases us to have the grandest built warship in England’s history so named. We are informed it weighs a colossal sixty-five tonnes!” Her pride in the statistic was apparent, as was her shock when I informed her that the US has eleven carriers exceeding a hundred tons each. She recovered admirably.

“Ships weigh not as much as the men who ‘mand them. We know many masters of the sea; and to which the scale of Spain’s ships never kept the master from embarking on their gold, nor did their size help their slow loading cannons. Yet we tend not to weigh matters of war Master Jeremy. We wouldst rather spend our time enjoying faires where all are engaged in merriment.”

She masterfully turned the conversation back to our faire.

“Her Grace Lady Allura hath informed me that the heart of Sandpoint is as loyal of subjects as my people and kingdom. All the loves and talents that shall be present, one cannot feel but only joy. As it was the heart of England that won the war with Spain, twas the heart of thine community that won thy heart of England’s Queen.”

She went on to discuss her favorite acts and vendors in some detail. And it is true that this year’s faire is bigger and better than the last.

Our new location at the Wild Hearts Equestrian Canter has a wonderful arena to host the jousts, where the knights of the Epona Equestrian Team will show off their skills along with more armor and new lances. If you stand near the center of the field, you may be showered with the splinters as they crash spears into shields! The joust gets more exciting and entertaining every year.

She also mentioned the addition of the wandering minstrel, Hawke Morrow, adding that he is as skilled as he is seasoned, and pleases any good-humored crowd. His specialty leans toward songs of serenity and the brown-coated crowd. If you get the reference, you won’t want to miss his performances.

The smells of grilled turkey legs and other delicious and traditional faire foods will percolate and permeate the grounds; so come hungry and eat your fill. Coffee, ale and fresh lemonade will be sold at different venues. The food alone will be worth the price of admission.

We are proud to present the high-energy Irish and Scottish tunes of Rebel Tymes. With three to four stringed instruments and traditional drums, they electrify any audience. Clap and dance along with crowd favorites and some you may never have heard before! We are always looking for volunteers and cast members; please contact us through the Sandpoint Renaissance Faire facebook page if you’d like to participate!

This year’s faire will be held Saturday, Sept. 1, and Sunday, Sept. 2, at the Wild Hearts Arena, 784 Shingle Mill Road. General admission is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and kids up to 17. Children 4 and under are free. Parking is free.

The castle gate will open at 10 a.m. and close at 6 p.m, with jousts at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Queen Elizabeth Tudor and a faire question

With the Sandpoint Renaissance Faire coming up, I sat down recently with Queen Elizabeth Tudor, who is planning a visit. She graciously answered all of my questions, including a few that might have earned me a front-row seat to a burning stake if we were in her domain.

When push comes to shove, plowers aim to help

I get this sudden feeling between my belly and my ribs that’s like being punched in the gut. It usually happens when I just messed up in a big way. Today it happened when two wheels of my plow rig found the edge of the road, going just a bit too far pushing snow over a cliff. The front of my vehicle started to drop as I hit the brakes and reached for reverse just in time. The third close call today. It won’t be the last.
