Young Vikings rally in opener
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 6 years, 4 months AGO
RIGBY — In an effort to spark a rally late in the fourth quarter of Friday’s season opener with Rigby, Coeur d’Alene had to get back to what the Vikings do well.
Instead of how they’d been playing for much of the game.
Colbey Nosworthy caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Kale Edwards with 57.9 seconds remaining, capping a Viking comeback from a 15-point deficit to beat the Trojans 29-26.
“We just had to quit what we’d been doing all night,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos, whose team turned the ball over five times. “We’ve got a lot of things to work on, but the kids kept battling. If you do that, good things are going to happen.”
Coeur d’Alene returned only one starter from last year’s state 5A runner-up.
“It was just a big play,” Amos said of the pass from Edwards to Nosworthy. “We’d struggled and had a lot of turnovers. But instead of panicking, we made the play when we needed.”
Coeur d’Alene trailed 26-7 late in the third quarter.
The momentum shifted midway through the fourth quarter after Rigby snapped the ball out of the end zone to pull Coeur d’Alene within 26-17 score with 6:29 remaining.
Shilo Morgan scored on a 6-yard run, his second score of the night for Coeur d’Alene to pull the Vikings within 26-23 with 3:17 remaining.
“We were playing a lot of kids that were playing their first varsity game,” Amos said. “I just told them to trust their teammates and not to panic, and they did that. Rigby’s a good team and gave us all we could handle tonight.”
Kale Edwards passed for 238 yards and two touchdowns for Coeur d’Alene, and was picked off three times. Shilo Morgan ran for 81 yards and a score, and Edwards ran for 78. Brennan Crawford caught five passes for 95 yards for the Vikings, whose lineup was filled with new players in starting roles after heavy graduation losses following last year’s state runner-up finish.
Keegan Thompson passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more for Rigby, which reached the state 5A quarterfinals last season before losing to Mountain View.
Coeur d’Alene hosts Gonzaga Prep next Friday.
