BONNERS FERRY — For the second year in a row, Bonners Ferry will have a swim team — and this fall it has doubled in size.

Last year, Julia Cummings blazed new ground, becoming the first Bonners Ferry High School swimmer, and also bringing home the first title. This year she is joined by Seamus Newcomb, meaning there is a boys team and a girls team. The team swims with Sandpoint, under Coach Greg Jackson, but they represent Bonners Ferry.

“Despite the size, the outlook is great for BFHS, with a likely state participant for the girls team, and somewhat strong showing at districts for the boys team,” said Jackson. “Julia will be competing against 1A-4A. I believe she will have a strong showing at the state level and be a top competitor among 3A.”

Jackson has high hopes for the Newcomb as well.

“He has a history in swimming and we hope to get him back to his roots and build on them,” explained Jackson.

The team is already training hard. Jackson said that since districts will combine 1A-4A, the Badgers will have a tough time competing with the 4A schools. However, he remains optimistic and believes that compared to their 3A counterparts, they should be within the top two at districts.

This team is certainly making waves, representing Bonners Ferry for the second year.
