Dec. 2, 1968 — ELECT OFFICERS

Approximately 25 couples attended a dinner program of the Welcome Wagon Newcomers club Nov. 23 at Community hall. Hostesses and hosts were Sandy and Terry Merwin, Merwin’s Hardware and Ski Shop; Dorothy and Beaner Johnson, Beaner’s Downtown Marina and Ski Haus; Adell and Pete Thompson, Pend Oreille Printers and Bee Hive; Carol and Gary Pietsch, Eclipse Printery and Sandpoint News Bulletin; Mr. and Mrs. Al Voltz, Schweitzer Basin ski instructor; Lucille and Walt McPherson, she is a Schweitzer ski instructor and he is county agent; Mary Margaret and Pinky Cochran, president of Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce; Rev. and Mrs. Dennis Niva, minister at Church of Christ. Rev. Niva gave the invocation.

New club officers elected were Shirley Bailey, president; Dianna Jacobsen, first vice president; Judy Kuhle, second vice president; Roxanne Keel, recording secretary; Dorothy Heath, corresponding secretary; Ann Tomlinson, treasurer, and Sherryle Wales, historian.

NIEMAN STARTS FOR WHITWORTH

Starting on the Whitworth College varsity basketball team that beat the Pirate alumni 78-70 in the annual pre-season game last Saturday was former Sandpoint ace Jim Nieman. Now standing six-foot-five and weighing 205 lbs., he was the only sophomore in the starting quintet.

Clarksfork is contributing her share of “flu” cases. Dr. Salmon reports 12 new cases.

Charles DeLisle is out again after a two weeks’ siege of “flu.”

FLU DANGER NOT OVER YET

“Because the ‘flu’ ban has been lifted in Sandpoint is no sign that people should disregard precautions,” said Dr. Wendle, new county health officer. “Dances particularly are good breeding places for the ‘flu’ germ.”

Dr. Wendle had but six new cases under his observation this week. Government figures show that up to Oct. 25, the total number of influenza deaths in the U.S. was 86,054.

MORE NURSES NEEDED

30,000 nurses were enrolled by the Red Cross department of nursing up to Oct. 1. Over 17,000 of these are serving soldiers and sailors, half of them already on duty overseas. About 9,000 additional nurses will be needed by the army alone before the first of the year.

SCHOOL NOTES

The use of the Liberty as a show house has upset all the high school cadet plans as there is now no place in town large enough for the military formation drills.
