SUPERIOR — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to notify the public and seek comments on a proposal to rebuild the Quartz Flats Rest Area on Interstate Highway 90 (I-90) near Superior in Mineral County.
The rest area is located on both sides of I-90 approximately 10 miles southeast of Superior at around reference post 58.
Phase I of the project will include planning and analysis of the rest area facilities, including evaluation and design of the water/wastewater systems for the rest area, conditional permitting of the systems through the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and preliminary environmental compliance documentation in accordance with the National and Montana Environmental Policy Acts. Phase I is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2020.
Phase II of the project will include rebuilding both sides of the rest area, including the water/wastewater systems, building structures, and the parking facilities. Phase II is expected to begin after completion of Phase I, depending on the availability of funding, with construction anticipated in 2021.
The purpose of the project is to extend the service life of the rest area in order to meet current and future rest area demand.
Right-of way acquisition is anticipated for facility expansion. The extents of right-of-way acquisition will be determined during Phase I activities.
