Coolin receives honor flag

Leonard Paul, chairman of the Liberty Loan drive at Coolin, received the honor flag for his district, for the second time.

C. P. Lindsay, driving R. M. Mears’ team of grays, narrowly escaped accident when the mare, becoming fractious, broke the tongue of the buckboard in which Mr. Lindsay was seated in front of the Priest River Times office. He got out and the team broke away, going down the street and crossing the track where they were stopped near the Beardmore barn.

Christmas facts and fancies

Turkey first became a Christmas dish in the reign of James 1, who could not eat the boar’s head usually provided. The first Christmas card was published 80 years ago. Christmas carols originated in the 11th century.

New fire gongs needed

At a meeting of the Independent School District No. 13, it was decided the school building needs additional fire gongs. There is only one gong now on the upper floor, and when fire drills are held the gong cannot be heard by the children in the lower grades.

New owners at Lou’s Place

Harry and Margaret James, who have been operating Lou’s Place on the West Branch, announced they will take over ownership on Jan. 1, having purchased the tavern from Bill and Vera Booher.

Mail station established at Vay

Robert Krouse, postmaster, announced that a new rural mail station has been established at Vay. The Vay Rural Station is a subsidiary of the Priest River Post Office. Mrs. Anne Castagna of Vay has been appointed clerk in charge.

Long-time city clerk passes

Max E. Salesky, 81, died Dec. 4 at Newport Community Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Salesky was born on April 29, 1887 in Saginaw. Mich. He came to Laclede in 1902, and in 1955 moved to Newport where he operated the Lilje Hotel. He was Priest River city clerk for many years.

Need seen for civic plan

Priest River needs a plan for community development, according to the consensus of over 60 residents who braved the elements to put in their ideas for redevelopment. Not only was the turnout heavy, but most people came with a host of suggestions from turning the town into a historical museum to using a wind-powered generator to supply its power needs and attract attention.

Northwoods show to air on PBS

The Northwoods Performing Arts musical group will have its Saturday night’s performance aired on Channel 6 next week. Bob Johns, a board member of Northwoods, said the camera crew filmed an hour’s worth of time and was very impressed with the skill and talents of the group.

Small turnout approves district split

Less then 2,500 of 10,241 registered voters approved a measure to separate the Bonner County School District No. 82, beginning with the new school year on July 1. Ann Souza, No. 82 trustee, said she was not pleased with the turnout.

Christmas on Main Street a great success

On Dec. 1, at least 200 kids, accompanied by family members, came to the Priest River Inn to see Santa Claus, play games and participate in various games and activities to win prizes.
