MATTAWA — Mattawa will soon have 47 new units of affordable housing for farmworker seasonal housing, persons with disabilities and families with children, due to a $3 million grant from the Washington State Housing Trust Fund, the Federal HOME program and the National Housing Trust Fund.

One of nine projects receiving grant funds across the state and one of only two in rural regions, the Mattawa project is the only one approved for Grant County. Tacoma-based Trillium Housing Services will be developing the Patchee 24 Junction project, which will join several other affordable housing projects in the area serving seasonal farm laborers.

Another round of applications for affordable housing grants will begin in January 2019, when the state Department of Commerce will assess statewide demand for funds and developer pipelines, according to a press release. Any project that did not receive an award in the 2018 round is eligible to reapply, in addition to new project proposals. Grants will be announced in summer 2019, contingent on adoption of the biennial capital budget by the state legislature.
