PRIEST RIVER — Wallace’s Zach Welch led all scorers with 31 points and Erik Brackebusch chipped in 25 en route to a 75-62 win over winless Priest River on Saturday.
Early on, Priest River wasn’t deterred by Wallace’s near-perfect shooting. Despite recording its first miss at the 5:14 mark of the first quarter, Wallace’s lack of defensive effort opened the door for Brandon McCracken and Jantzen Lucas to heat up, both of whom combined for 15 first-quarter points.
“Offensively, we played well — [Zack] Welch did a good job of getting to the hoop and hitting threes,” Wallace head coach Corey Miller said. “And it was great to see [Erik] Brackebusch take over, hold down the ship and keep everyone in control when Zach was out.”
Even though the Miners sat Welch for most of the second quarter, efforts from Erik Brackebusch put the Spartans at bay. Priest River’s undoing was a six-minute cold spell in which they were outscored 20-6.
Priest River outscored Wallace 28-26 in the second half, but getting out of the first half hole they dug themselves in was too tall a task for the Spartans.
Wallace (7-0) looks to continue its winning streak against Bonners Ferry on Dec. 18. Priest River (0-6) will regroup for winter break, then look for its first win of the season at Bonners Ferry on Jan. 4.
