Quilters with the Stumptown Quilt Society wanted to make sure a few folks have a cheerful table for the holidays.

The society this week was dropping of donations of homemade placemats at the North Valley Food Bank and the Whitefish Community Center, where the placemats will be included with the home delivery meal program Meals on Wheels. The placemats all have a Christmas theme.

About three dozen placemats were given to the community center and even more to the food bank.

Kathy Cozad, with the Community Center, said the placemats would go to those receiving meals on Christmas Eve. Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver meals to older adults in need.

“This is awesome,” she said. “That’s one of the days we have the biggest client list.”

Members of the quilt society often make quilted items to donate to charities throughout the Flathead Valley. This is the second year they’ve made placemats.

Quilt society members Mary Warner and Kathy Shigo made the deliveries on behalf of their fellow quilters.

“This is a fun project that we can make in one sitting,” Warner said.

“We’re always looking for projects we can do in an hour or two,” Shigo added.

“Quilters love to sew and we always have extra fabric that we don’t want to waste,” Warner said of the projects they create to give to others.

The Stumptown Quilt Society meets the second Saturday of the month at St. Peters Church, 211 Wisconsin Avenue, and is open to anyone interested in any form of quilting including beginners. A short meeting is held, fabric exchange, demonstration, snacks, project sewing and socializing.
