COEUR d’ALENE — An inmate from Coeur d’Alene serving time in an Idaho prison died this week from an apparent suicide.

Clifford Daniel Singer, 69, of Coeur d’Alene was found hanging in his cell at 9:18 p.m. last Saturday by a corrections officer, according to a press release from the Idaho Deptartment of Correction.

He was taken to a Boise hospital, where he died Thursday evening.

Singer was serving time at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution on a felony DUI charge, according to IDOC spokesman Jeffrey Ray.

He had a felony burglary sentence discharged in May, Ray said.

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, according to IDOC policy on unattended deaths, Ray said.

Singer was sentenced in October in Coeur d’Alene’s First District Court to between three and 10 years for a July 2 offense. He wasn’t scheduled for parole until 2021, a prison spokesperson said.

Singer had been in prison for less than a month before the suicide attempt.

Judge John Mitchell had retained jurisdiction at sentencing allowing Singer time behind bars to attend a prison rehab program.
