Flathead, Glacier finish swim season at Great Falls

GREAT FALLS — Major Robinson, head coach for the Flathead and Glacier swim programs, is looking for his qualifiers to complete the 2017-18 season this weekend at the Great Falls High School pool with season best efforts at the state meet.
“I really would like to see everyone go out there and compete like the way they have been practicing all year ... attacking it,” he said.
“Have them put together some good times. If they do that, they will score well. Hopefully it will get us to where we want to be in the end.”
Swimming begins Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m.
The preliminaries are held in all events the first day. The top 12 times advance swimmers and relay teams to the consolation finals and finals on Day 2.
Missoula Hellgate is again favored to claim the boys and girls Class AA titles.
If everything would go as planned, or better, Robinson would like to see the Glacier girls “challenge for a podium spot. Should be close to the top three if a couple girls sneak into the finals and the relays step up.”
He said having the Flathead girls crack the top 10 in the final standings would be a super showing.
For the boys, Flathead could battle for a fourth-fifth spot with Glacier in the top 10.
“Hellgate is a very, very deep team,” he said.
“They will have one or two finalists in every event.”
In addition to Jamie Bouda, 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, for Flathead and A.J. Popp, 100 and 200 freestyle, for Glacier, both who will challenge for individuals titles, Caroline Dye of Glacier in the 100 and 200 freestyle, Bailey Rhodes of Glacier in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Jace Reed of Flathead in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly, should make the finals.
“Our relays look pretty good,” Robinson said.
“I don’t know if we can beat Hellgate, but we can get second in a couple relays and push Hellgate a little bit.”
Bozeman’s boys and girls finished second to Hellgate last year in the state standings.
The Whitefish girls and Billings Central boys, took the Class A titles a year ago.
