Bob Kirkpatrick/The Sun Tribune - Jaxon Rocha takes down East Valley’s Stephen Nugent is semifinal action. Rocha lost a 10-3 decision, but finished strong, placing fifth with a 5-4 decision over David Saunders from Grandview.

ELLENSBURG — The Huskies battled it out with some of the best 2A grapplers in the state at the District 5/6 Wrestling Championships over the weekend in Ellensburg, but came up just shy of their goal, finishing runner-up to Toppenish.

The Wildcats, who took their fourth straight district title, recorded 281.5 team points. Othello posted 259.

“I thought we wrestled well at an extremely tough tournament,” coach Rudy Ochoa II said. “We had ranked guys and returning state placers and participants from last year not even make it through and they wrestled well.”

The Huskies turned in a decent performance Friday advancing eight of 24 wrestlers; Chris Melo, Arturo Solorio, Jaxon Rocha, Easton Roylance, Bernie Garza Junior, DJ Guzman, Isaiah Perez and Elijah Roylance to the semifinals. However, of those eight, only Melo, Easton Roylance, Garza and Perez moved on to championship matches on Saturday. Melo took an 8-4 decision over Wapato’s Uriel Garcia to claim the 106 title. Perez pinned Efrain Bedolla from Ephrata to take top honors at 285. Roylance and Garza finished runner-up at 152 and 160.

“We thought we could have got a few more in the semis and a couple more in the finals, but that’s how it goes sometimes,” Ochoa said. “We lost some close ones. The team race was close; a couple wins go our way we and may have come out on top. We have a pretty young team, whether it be age or experience, so for us to be within striking distance of Toppenish we take that as a big positive. Now on to regionals and we will give it our best.”

Othello will have 13 wrestlers and one alternate make the trip to East Valley High School in Spokane this weekend.

Coach Ochoa is not expecting a cakewalk for the Huskies.

“It is going to be another dog fight this weekend. Our region has many tough wrestlers and we hope we can get as many guys through as possible.”

Team scores: Toppenish 281.5, Othello 259, Wapato 242, Quincy 176.5, Ephrata 156, Selah 152, Ellensburg 126, Prosser 104, East Valley 58, Grandview 19.
