n Final Pre-Olympic World Cup — Lindsey Vonn had a big week on the Kandahar track, winning two downhills, victories 80 and 81. But the news at Garmisch-Partenkirchen wasn’t all good for the US as Jacqueline Wiles suffered a season ending injury, knocking her out of her second Olympics. Alpine action in Korea starts Sunday with the Mens’ Downhill.

n Western Region FIS Speed — SARS successfully hosted a week of top-level speed completion, despite Mother Nature’s efforts. Three local athletes competed. Farli Boden was 15th and 7th in the two downhills and 12th and 8th in the Super Gs. Morgan Wohlaib posted results of 27th and 33rd in Downhill and a pair of 33rds in the Super G. Addison McNamara was 49th in both of the Men’s Downhills.

n Starlight “Spy Games” begin — Friday night brought out the adults to battle for bragging rights under the stars. The fastest men’s and women’s Alpine skiers were Chris Acosta and Courtney Altringer (soon to both be Acostas). The fastest snowboard times were posted by Michael Waldrop and Tracy Tuttle. In the telemark world, Grant Kennaly was the fastest male and Dig Chrismer the fastest female. The three top teams, in descending order, were “Shredded not Stirred,” “007Bs” and “Team with the Golden Skis.” There are so many great team names this year that we’ll recognize tow per week. This week’s winners are “The Spy who waxed me” and “Shredded not Stirred.”

n Potpourri — Watch here next week for Olympic, Northwest VCup and Youth Ski League results. Any comments, recommendations or contributions to this column may be sent to Shep Snow by e-mail at shep@thesnowschool.com. Negative feedback should be sent to someone else.

It’s an outdoor sport ... — What a weekend. The Edge can’t remember a stranger set of events — rain, high winds, very dense fog, lightning, then a sudden freeze. Not many sports present the number of variables to the athletes as ski racing (Alpine or Nordic). Our competitors braved it all and persevered.
