WARDEN — The Lady Huskies dominated the competition at the sub-regional championships in Warden Saturday finishing with 277 team points. Warden was a distant second with 162.5. Quincy took third with 96 points.
Othello crowned two champions in sophomore Emily Mendez who beat teammate Gabriela Rodriguez 10-2 to claim the 105-pound crown, and Elizabeth Giles who pinned Sara Morrow of Wenatchee in the 140-weight class. The team also had three runners-up and qualified 13 for the regional tournament being held at East Valley High School in Spokane this weekend.
“The girls did really well — I was pleased on how they wrestled — and really happy with the efforts of our two freshman Iyaely Barraza and Mercades Gonzalez who rose up and performed well,” coach JJ Martinez said. “We are now at most important week though. We need to get numbers to the state tourney if we want to make any kind of run at state hardware. We are in the toughest region so it’s going to be tough, but we have to find a way to rise to the occasion one more time.”
