A 20-year-old Coeur d'Alene man died early Sunday in a single-vehicle crash following a short pursuit by a Kootenai County sheriff's deputy.

Patrick J. Calligan was pronounced dead at the scene, on north Huetter Road in Post Falls, according to news releases from Idaho State Police and the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.

The crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. after the sheriff's deputy “observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and in a reckless manner,” said the sheriff's office. “This led to a short vehicle pursuit which began at west Prairie Avenue and north Huetter Road. The pursuit ended with the fleeing vehicle crashing on north Huetter Road just north of west Seltice Way.”

Per Idaho State Police investigators, Calligan was driving a 2005 Ford Crown Victoria south on Huetter Road when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car.

The investigation by Idaho State Police is ongoing.
