COEUR d’ALENE — Fold. Cut. Curl. Glue. Repeat.

These steps were followed in a whirlwind of book pages and construction paper on Saturday during the Coeur d'Alene Public Library's Make It: Valentine Roses event, and the end result was a creative collection of fancy faux flowers.

"We saw it on Facebook and thought we'd check it out. It looked fun," said Keli Moran of Rathdrum, who brought her daughter, Justine, 13, and 5-year-old son Skyler to the event. "I might put them on my desk at work and make a little bouquet."

Kate Dolan, troop leader of Girl Scout Troop 3032 in Coeur d'Alene, said her Scouts always enjoy these kinds of opportunities. Four of them accompanied her to the paper party.

"They love to do crafts, and it really appealed to me personally. And of course, it's very timely for Valentine's Day," she said. "The girls are very artistic. They love to draw, they love to paint, anything artsy. They also like to backpack and camp and sell cookies, but they love to do stuff like this."

More than 50 people of all ages took advantage of the Make-It Lab, where library guests are welcome to use the arts and crafts supplies any time.

"All of this stuff stays in here and stays available at all times," said JD Smithson, Lake City Public Library branch manager. "That's what it's for. We want people to come in and use it."

And what better time to be crafting paper roses than Valentine's Day?

"It's always a nicer gift to get something that's made by hand," Smithson said. "And they last a lot longer than real roses."
