OTHELLO — Adams County Commissioners stopped by the Othello Senior Center Feb. 16 to show their support in the form of a $10,000 donation.
Commissioners Roger Hartwig and Jeff Stevens explained that the commissioners wanted to support the center because of its service and support of the community.
“We appreciate what you are doing,” said Hartwig.
The facility is a non-profit, self-supporting center said Othello Senior Center Board of Directors secretary, Lynette Caruthers.
The center had been in financial straits, dipping into their reserves to stay afloat. Proceeds from the meal they host every third Thursday of the month has been the primary way to keep the doors open Caruthers explained.
So board members, Adams County Commissioners and Adams County Development Council director, Stephen McFadden, got together to brainstorm possibilities for raising more money. The commissioners also decided to bump up their yearly contribution to the center as a result.
“Without the generosity of people like you, we wouldn’t be able to operate,” said MaryAnn Kirkpatrick, treasurer for the Othello Senior Center Board of Directors.
Everyone is welcome to use the facilities Caruthers explained. Everything from exercise classes and daily meals, to events, festivals and group meet ups are regularly held there.
The center has also served as the primary meeting location for the Beautification Committee, Sandhill Crane Festival, Othello Chamber of Commerce, Othello Museum, Coulee Corridor, Rotary Club Board, and Habitat for Humanity and the Lions Club.
Caruthers explained that with all of the events, meetings and gatherings held there, the center really serves as a connecting point for people in the community and gives them a place to gather and socialize.
“That’s what we are all about,” Caruthers said. “Connecting the community.”
