The Plains Trap Club is in full swing with their winter league, and shooters are getting geared up for the annual Turkey Shoot.

The popular event has been running for close to 20 years alongside the winter and summer leagues.

The club usually sees around 15 five-person teams compete, but it varies year to year.

Shooters are scored both individually and as teams for the league event. Prizes vary each year, and for each competition.

The spring shoot known as the Turkey Shoot, is scheduled for March 24, just after the finale of the winter league.

The event draws around 30 to 40 shooters, from Hamilton, Missoula, Libby and Sanders County.

During the event, competitors shoot what they call a regular trap, doubles, Annie Oakleys and buddy shoots.

The doubles competition works just like a normal trap except the competitors are shooting to hit two birds.

While the Annie Oakleys are individual events, shooters will line up next to each other. Shooters will be eliminated if they miss their target and the person next to them hits the next target.

This event works similar to a round-robin where the score and or elimination depends on whether you hit the target and are compared directly to fellow shooters.

Competitors in the buddy shoot are randomly paired up. They both aim to hit the target. If both shooters miss the same target they are eliminated.

With both the Annie Oakleys and buddies there are multiple prizes up for grabs are presented depending on the number of shooters in each round.

People interested in competing or checking out the upcoming events can get all the information on the trap club’s Facebook page @plainstrap59859
